What is Soap?
Soap is the product of a chemical reaction between Lye (also called sodium Hydroxide) & Water with Fats/oils. Using these 3 ingredients makes true "Soap". If a cleaning product is made without using Lye, then it is called a detergent and is not really soap at all.
This chemical reaction is called "Saponification". Within 24 hours 80%-95% of the Saponification is complete, over the next several days to weeks it will complete.
SAP Value and why it is important:
Fats and Oils are composed of fatty acids, which require a certain amount of Alkali (lye) to saponify them, or turn them into soap. This is your SAP Value. Every type of fat/oil has a different SAP Value.If you use too little lye it will cause an excess of unsaponified (free) fats/oils, leaving you with a soft/slimy bar of soap, which will wash away in the shower, leave a greasy residue and will not lather.
If you use too much lye it will give you a hard/ brittle bar of soap that will leave your skin dry and itchy. (Kind of like grandma’s!)
How to safely handle lye:
ALWAYS WEAR RUBBER GLOVES WHEN HANDLING LYE!
Something about Lye:
Lye is a very strong Alkali; if you get it on you it will burn you! Due to Lye’s caustic nature you need to use extreme caution when working with it. Keep children and animal far away; NEVER leave lye unattended, DO NOT smell it or taste it! Try to cover any exposed areas of your body with clothing when using Lye.When handling Lye only use heat resistant glass / plastic or stainless steel containers. Wood, plastic or stainless steel utensils. DO NOT use aluminum; the lye will eat it up in a HURRY! My personal favorite is a Dishwasher safe Plastic pitcher with a Lid, for added safety.
Keep a container/basin of 1 part vinegar to 5 parts water nearby at all times. This solution will counter act the lye if for any reason you may get it on you or anything! It is also a good idea to place all your soap making equipment into this solution till you can clean them as well
